The competition will begin at 9am Saturday, February 12, with finals then played the following day.
Tournament manager John Pettigrew says despite team numbers being slightly down, he’s expecting a great turnout, all things considered.
“We’re about three of four teams down at this stage, it’s a very good result with everything going on at this time of year,” Pettigrew said.
“This is the first in a series of tournaments on the circuit, it’s always a bit difficult at this time of year with the risks of high temperatures.”
More than 300 players and 40 teams are expected to grab a racquet and take to the courts across the weekend, with some of the best badminton players across Victoria expected to make an appearance.
“There’s a fair bit of badminton to be played over the two days, everyone will play three matches, with two on Saturday and one on the Sunday,” Pettigrew said.
“We’re expecting a real mix of players across the nine grades, we’ll have some ex-Australia representatives in our A-grades, while some of the older competitors will compete in our D and E divisions.”
Pettigrew says popularity of badminton has been growing in Shepparton in the past few years.
Late last year, the Shepp Feathers Badminton Club was inaugurated.
“There’s over 300 people coming into town; tournaments like these are good for Shepparton, good for the region and good for badminton,” Pettigrew said.
