Saturday pennant bowls began on November 6 with Seymour Bowling Club fielding teams in divisions three, four and six of the Goulburn Valley playing area of the newly-formed Goulburn Murray Bowls Region.
Division three made the trek to Stanhope and was fortunate to dodge the thunderstorms and come home with a convincing win, winning three of four rinks.
Seymour 16-111 d Stanhope 2-76
Wilma Atkins, Bernie Dillon, Dale Sellick, Graeme Flint (s) 30 defeated K. Hoppner 16
Graeme Flint made his debut as a top team skip with a victory. Despite being down by two shots after nine ends, a six on the end before smoko paved the way for Flint’s rink to win 12 of the final 16 ends and claim an emphatic victory.
Jenny Ridd, Gail Krzciuk, Rob Baldwin, Max Hammond (s) 30 defeated N. Cowie 22
Max Hammond’s rink got off to a flying start, winning the first seven ends to go ahead 14-0. It led 29-13 after 20 ends and, despite dropping four of the last five ends, the damage had been done as it recorded an eight-shot victory.
Linda Brown, Bill Solomon, Milton Howell, Rob Brown (s) 34 defeated P. Myers 15
Robert Brown’s rink also got off to a good start, leading 12-5 at the break. A four on the next end set up a good lead. Despite dropping four ends in the middle, it finished strongly, winning the last six ends for a convincing victory.
Allan Welsh, Dot Dillon, Eliot Jarman, Ian Eichfuss (s) 17 lost to C. Evans 23
Ian Eichfuss’s team got off to a bit of a slow start but it stayed in touch to be only five down after 14 ends. Dropping five shots on the next end was a blow, however the team fought it out to the end but couldn’t bridge the gap, eventually succumbing by six shots.
Division four visited Shepparton Park Bowling Club and, despite only winning one rink and drawing one rink, the Seymour side won by 10 shots.
Seymour 13-96 d Shepp Park 5-86
Nick Munari, John Heywood, Di Staples, Gary Broderick (s) 22 drew M. Pretty 22
Gary Broderick’s rink had an even tussle all day, with the skip engineering three shots on the final end to tie an exciting game and secure the valuable point.
Maureen Prudden, Ian Ridd, Jenny Kreemers, Wendy Hutton (s) 18 lost to A. Russo 27
Wendy Hutton’s rink was down by 11 shots at the end of the 19th but persevered under some adversity, eventually going down by only nine when things might have got out of hand. Well done!
Brett Tarran, Don Prudden, Vin Hall, Vince Muller (s) 24 lost to B. Semmens 27
Vince Muller’s rink was locked in a tight struggle all day. It was one down with two rinks to play, but dropped singles on each of the last two ends to fall three short.
Alice Hall, Lyn Meek, Marg Locke, Jan Wesslman (s) 32 d B. Brown 10
Jan Wesselman’s rink was without doubt the highlight of the team. Four females pitted against four males and sugar and spice and all things nice gave the Shepp Park boys a fair old thumping! Winning the first six ends, Wesselman’s rink never took the foot off the throats of the hosts, winning 18 of the 25 ends and running away to win by 22 shots to ensure Seymour took home the bulk of the points. A great win!
Division six had a really tough day at the (synthetic) office at Alexandra. An anomaly of the new Goulburn Valley playing area pitted the Seymour team against a very strong ex-Central Bowls opponent in Alex, and the result was not entirely surprising. We trust that members of this team will dust themselves off for their next match.
Seymour 0-25 lost to Alexandra 16-120
Trish Green, Noel Pianta, Robbie Harper, Tony Lee (s) 6 lost to G. Gilmore 42
Lyn Rieniets, Peter Smith, Margaret Flynn, Greg Quillinan (s) 9 lost to R. Benghamy 52.
Ron Ridd (debut), Alison Ridley, Lois Tomkins, Dennis Klein (s) 10 lost to K. Argent 26
That’s all for Saturday pennant. Midweek pennant will have resumed (Tuesday) by the time this goes to print and results will appear next week.
Members are reminded that the men’s and women’s singles and pairs club championships have started and the bowls committee has said matches MUST be completed by the dates indicated. Check the noticeboard and your emails. Don’t risk being forfeited!
