The Nagambie Cricket Club is seeking expressions of interest for players, a coach and a team manager for its first women’s side since the club’s formation in 1882.
President Ryan Matthews said the decision to found a women’s side had been quickly put into action after strong interest was shown.
“It was about a month ago and I was talking to some of the girls at the Nagambie Football Club and I mentioned the idea to them and they showed a keen interest in it,” he said.
“Just from asking around the football club and asking a few of my wife’s friends I just realised there was real potential there to get a team going, and it has grown from there.
“Anyone who is willing to have a go is welcome. It’s a great environment to meet new friends and enjoy the game of cricket.
“At this stage we’ve just had feedback on the senior women’s team. At the moment we haven’t seen interest in regards to juniors but it’s something we’d potentially love to look at.
“I do know that the Shepparton comp is looking at getting a junior girls’ comp going, which is something we’ll promote, gauge interest and if there’s enough we’ll proceed with it.”
With the national women’s cricket side being the most successful team in Australian history in terms of dominance, longevity and accolades, it’s no surprise to Matthews that there is demand for a women’s team in Nagambie.
“It has to be a big reason why a lot of girls want to play cricket,” he said.
“It’s something that we have to keep promoting and keep the girls coming up through the ranks so that they can reach those levels.”
The Nagambie Cricket Club is looking to enter its women’s side into the Goulburn Murray League this season, after the league recently announced an overhaul of its competitions for females.
From this season the GML A and B grade competitions will be merged into one league of 10 sides. That is not including any new entrants, such as Nagambie.
Matthews said the games would most likely follow either a 20- or 25-over format and would be played on Sundays.
There is also the possibility of playing a number of night games under lights at Nagambie’s oval.
If you’re interested in being part of Nagambie’s first ever women’s side as a player, coach or team manager, you can send your expressions of interest to the club by emailing nagambiecricket@gmail.com or calling Ryan Matthews on 0447 295 807.
