Goulburn Murray Cricket has made the decision to cancel the next two rounds amid the ongoing flood crisis throughout the region, while Campaspe Bowls has joined them in cancelling this week’s pennant competitions.
With the opening two rounds already washed out, GMC made the announcement on Monday to postpone senior and junior cricket until at least early November.
GMC said through its social media channels that a decision on play would be made “in the coming weeks”, likely after the worst of the flooding had passed.
“All cricket has been called off for the next two weeks,” the league said.
“The GMC executive will reassess over the coming weeks to deliver a new start date.
“What we are currently experiencing is so much larger than a game of cricket. We hope everyone is safe and well.”
This will be the third season running local cricket has seen a delayed start, with COVID-19 affecting the start of the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.
Neighbouring league Cricket Shepparton also made the decision to call off its next two rounds of play and a statement from its president indicated what the decision-making process would hold in the coming weeks.
Round two of Campaspe midweek and pennant bowls has also been cancelled, with inter-regional travel currently discouraged. The State Pairs tournament due to be held at Rich River has also been postponed.
