The long-time football player also happens to be outstanding when it comes to track and field athletic events.
Mitch himself was as surprised as anybody to learn of his athletics abilities.
He recently competed at the School Sport Victoria’s Hume Secondary Track and Field Championships, which were held in Albury, where he came first in the high jump and second in the 1500m.
Mitch cleared the high jump bar set at 1.7m and completed his 1500m running event in 4.52.17 minutes.
His achievements mean Mitch will compete in the Victorian State Track and Field Secondary School State Championships later this month.
Sport has always been part of the Year 12 student’s life, and he has been a long-time player for the Cobram football club.
However, Mitch is the first to admit that his athletics results surprised him. Although he admits that having played football did help when it came to endurance and physical strength.
“I’ve always been a good runner for 1500 I guess but I never knew I was good at high jump,” he said.
Asked what tactic Mitch used to win his race, he explained that it was just a case of trailing the race leader and waiting until they tired.
“I just wanted to follow the leader for a bit and he slowed down and I took the front,” Mitch said.
Mitch, a reserved and humble personality by nature, described being on the podium at the Albury event as surreal but also enjoyable.
He is naturally very excited to be representing his school at the state championships and is keen to show the competition what he is made of.
“It feels pretty good. I am looking forward to it,” he said.
