The decision, which has evolved from a thorough permit application process along with significant advocacy, ensures central heritage elements are conserved while structural and safety concerns are addressed.
Approved works are to involve the full demolition of the existing timber bridge structure, removal of associated infrastructure and the restoration of land-based abutments of the bridge.
The plans also include the rehabilitation of the surrounding riverbank and the implementation of an interception strategy to honour the bridge's historical significance.
The permit was issued under the Heritage Act 2017 and includes a range of conditions set in place to protect the bridge's heritage value during the works.
These conditions require the engagement of qualified heritage and structural consultants, comprehensive archival documentation, a detailed Heritage Interpretation Strategy to inform the community on the bridge’s historical significance, and strict oversight by Heritage Victoria.
Strathbogie Shire Mayor Claire Ewart-Kennedy said the permit approval had been well received by council.
“While the decision to remove the bridge was not taken lightly, this project ensures that its heritage value is preserved through interpretation and conservation efforts,” Cr Ewart-Kennedy said.
“We are committed to honouring the bridge’s historical significance while ensuring the safety and sustainability of the area.
“Council remains committed to achieving the best possible outcome for our community.
“We will continue to advocate to state and Federal governments for the balance of funds to complete the demolition.”
Community members are encouraged by council to stay informed as the project progresses.
All works are to be carried out in accordance with Heritage Victoria’s conditions, with an expected completion timeline of up to four years.
“Chinamans Bridge is an important part of our local history, and through careful planning, we can continue to share its story with future generations,” Cr Ewart-Kennedy said.
“Council is dedicated to working closely with the community to deliver an outcome that respects our past while looking ahead to the future.”
