The club is keen to create more biodiversity around the course and hoped the inclusion of a greater variety of native plants would encourage native birds to the course.
Club secretary Ronda Richards said golfers enjoyed playing the course but also the scenery it offered.
“The shrubs and trees have been chosen based on the salinity tolerance, as Nagambie Golf Course has a bore for irrigation and during the past 10 years the water has become more saline,” she said.
“By planting trees and shrubs with a high tolerance to salt we hope to have a higher success rate of long-term growth. We are also aware that each tree planted helps with carbon sequestration and improves our air quality.”
Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority funded the cost of the shrubs and trees and assisted in sourcing tree guards.
“Local builder Michael LeDeux also donated stakes for the trees, and we were lucky to receive labour support from the CMA Drought Employment Program,” Ms Richards said.
“CMA staff and golf club members spent the entire day planting all the trees and shrubs around the course.”
Despite a resent theft, the club has a positive outlook for the future and is happy to see golfers returning now that restrictions have been eased.
“Our members were saddened by the break-in as the club is a not-for-profit community-run club. Everything costs money to fix and this is money that could have been spent on improving the course,” Ms Richards said.
“The club has created a temporary membership for three months costing only $100. It is available to any resident who lives within 20 km of Nagambie.
“Due to the safety requirements the club has to limit play to members only and is unable to open the club house. All players must contact the secretary prior to playing to list their tee-off times.
“We really encourage residents who are missing their sport due to restrictions to take up the three-month membership offer so you can get out in the fresh air and enjoy a game of golf.
“Even if the golf is not that good, it can still be a great 10 km walk.”
