The ute and truck collided near the intersection of Boomahnoomoonah Road and Carmichaels Road at about 2.30pm.
The male driver of the truck was treated at the scene but could not be revived.
The female driver of the ute was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision, but local farmer Chris Dowling, who was among the first on the scene, says the situation on those roads is getting out of hand.
Mr Dowling and his wife arrived on the scene to find the truck on its side.
“We thought we might be able to save him, we thought there might be a chance, but he died at the scene,” Mr Dowling said.
A rescue chopper arrives on scene
Less than a year ago, Mr Dowling’s son-in-law was almost killed on the same intersection when a driver failed to give way.
“The roads are in a disgusting state, and because of all the speed restriction signs and roadworks through Bundalong, people are avoiding the highway,” he said.
“Traffic is diverting along the back roads and driving too fast.
“We need to fix the Murray Valley Highway to get people off these roads.”
Mr Dowling drives through the Boomahnoomoonah Road and Carmichaels Road intersection multiple times every day and sees near misses “all the time”.
“Now we’re seeing fatalities,” he said.
“The amount of traffic on these roads is out of hand, it’s not what they were designed for.
“The Murray Valley Highway is the cause of all this … people have had enough and they’re taking the back roads.
“The number of cars, going along Channel Rd to avoid Yarrawonga is horrendous.”
