Yarrawonga Mulwala RSL Sub-Branch President from 1999 to 2001, long time historian, author of such war-related books as ‘Murray Heroes’ and ‘A Trilogy’ which included local ex-servicemen and women, a Master of Yarrawonga Lodge of St David and writer of Masonic Musings, golfer – that was some of Stan Clarke OAM.
Stan turned 99-years-of-age on March 2 and lost his fight with ill health last Friday, March 17, passing away in hospital at Wangaratta.
In World War II, Stan performed a high level, specialized role of a signals interception operator, known as a ‘Kana man’, intercepting Japanese Morse code messages for use by the Central Bureau Code Breakers.
He became part of a highly secret RAAF unit that was one of the very few Australian units to join American forces in the liberation of the Philippines.
