On September 2, 1872, the railway line from Melbourne to Seymour was opened, an important event in Seymour’s history and a crucial step to opening up land access further along what would become the North-Eastern railway line.
Next year, the historical society, along with Vic Rail, will celebrate 150 years since the completion of the whole North East line to Albury-Wodoga and rail connection between Victoria and NSW.
The Goulburn River Rail Bridge is what made it possible for the railway to come to Seymour.
In 1872, a temporary bridge was constructed to get materials across the river for the construction of the Seymour station.
Only wagons were permitted to cross due to its rickety composition.
This was replaced by the main bridge on August 26, 1872, allowing trains to reach the newly constructed Seymour station.
Historical society researcher Nancy Haplin said the society was trying to bring the history of the railway to the people of Seymour, lest it got lost in the annals of history.
“The amount of information that’s been gathered over the last 50 years is absolutely phenomenal,” she said.
From esteemed royal visits to the ladies of the refreshment rooms and the role of the rail in wartime, there is something to tickle the fancy of any history aficionado.
Members of the public are invited to join the society’s general meetings and listen to guest speakers for a gold coin donation.
Guest speaker Cliff Earl attended the general meeting on Sunday, August 28. As a steam and diesel train driver, he has spent most of his life on the railways.
The 92-year-old began work on the railway at age 14 and has an exceptional recollection of his time on the rails.
Meetings are held every two months at the historical society’s rooms in the pioneer library at 4 Edwards St, Seymour. The next meeting will be October 23rd. They are open for guest visits on Wednesdays.
The SD&S will be open for a railway display on September 10 and 11 between ten am and three pm.
Alternatively, phone 0490 145 899 and the society will be pleased to help you. You can also follow its Facebook page for information and updates.
