Works have started in Seymour as the Australian Rail Track Corporation prepares to replace the Seymour-Avenel Rd bridge with a new higher structure in the same location to allow the safe running of double-stacked freight trains.

ARTC’s construction partner, McConnell Dowell, has established a worksite and is constructing a temporary road to allow business and local traffic to access Granville Dve.

The Seymour-Avenel Rd bridge will be closed for about 12 months or until works are completed.

Traffic will be detoured via Avenal Rd and High St, Seymour.

The new bridge will have a 35m span, about 3.2m higher than the existing structure.

The design will incorporate earth embankments sympathetic to the surrounding environment and retaining walls to reduce impact on Avenel Rd.

Construction of the new bridge is expected to be completed in 2025.
