Although they are still to return to their Tallarook St rooms, members have ‘popped up’ most Tuesdays at the Seymour Flood Recovery Hub to meet visitors and do some sorting and research.
The society has successfully gained a Public Records Office of Victoria grant to purchase equipment to help digitise and catalogue its collection.
It realised that was very important when the flood affected much of its collection stored in filing cabinets.
A grant from Cherry Tree Windfarm for Compactus shelving units will also help the group be more organised.
New members have joined the society, bringing fresh new ideas.
This year, it held a display at the Seymour show, a successful Bunnings barbecue fundraiser and had presentations in the windows of Kilmartin’s Pharmacy and the Goulburn Murray Credit Union.
It also collaborated with Mitchell Shire Council to mount a historical display to mark the anniversary of the 2022 flood, joined with Seymour Rail Heritage Centre to mount a historical display to mark the 150th anniversary of the north-east railway and combined with Lost Avenel to begin scanning historical rate records dating back to the 1860s.
Seymour and District Historical Society said it was incredibly fortunate to have the council’s full support in helping it recover from the October 2022 flood.
The Seymour Uniting Church stepped in to help store its collection while the rooms were being repaired.
Members would like to invite Seymour and district residents to join them at the society’s annual general meeting on Sunday, November 26, from 2pm at the Seymour Flood Recovery Hub.
The agenda includes the usual meeting business, followed by a short local ‘history snapshot’ and afternoon tea.
