Rotarians from Alexandra and Yea, assistant governor Sharon Fox, Strathbogie Shire councillors Fiona Stevens and Rhonda Sanderson, members and guests attended the event at the BarLandy Room on Saturday, June 29.
The afternoon showcased the club’s achievements under the leadership of president Greg Byers, his board and active Rotarians.
Mr Byers reflected on the year’s theme “create hope in the world” and how it had inspired Rotarians to seek and implement change while retaining Rotary’s core principles of service above self and community support.
His report summarised the major activities for the year, including Australia Day, a trivia night, a charity golf day, the Rotary Market, 70th anniversary celebration, regular club meetings and vocational visits.
He thanked the board and club members for their ongoing commitment to Rotary and their efforts in making a difference in the community.
The club has taken part in inter-club visits within the region to the Rotary clubs of Alexandra and Kinglake Ranges, as well as significant community and service projects, including Our Pride of Workmanship Awards.
Rotarian Alison Hall presented the Pride of Workmanship awards to Janelle Puppa from Janelle Puppa Real Estate and Jenifer Ornsby from Helloworld Travel Seymour.
Ms Hall said this year’s award recognised people who surpassed expectations for exemplary vocational service.
She highlighted how the women had made a difference in the community through their businesses and their extra efforts to support community members.
Youth continues to be a priority for the club, with initiatives like the Student Writers Award, Year 10 mock interviews, Rotary Junior Community Award, scholarships and District Assembly for Youth.
At the end of the Rotary year, it is customary for the president to distribute funds raised from fundraising activities to community organisations.
Recipients this year included Central Church, Seymour College for school uniforms, Polio Plus, all-abilities basketball tournament, SES, Barrabill House, Men’s Shed, Karingal, Nagambie Soccer Club, Avenel Community Hub and Seymour Scout Group.
The Paul Harris Fellowship is the Rotary Foundation’s way of appreciating substantial contributions to its humanitarian and educational programs.
Mark Dossor, the recipient of this award, has been an active and enthusiastic Rotary member for 13 years, capably carrying out many roles, with this year's highlight being the initiation of the Rotary Market.
