First settled in 1837 as part of the 10,927-hectare (27,000-acre) Tallarook Run, Rokeby sits on the Upper Goulburn Rd.
The current homestead dates from the 1870s and was given a significant renovation in the 1920s. The original shingled cottage, which predates the homestead, still stands in the garden.
Set at the dramatic Tallarook Ranges base near the Goulburn River, the 2ha (five-acre) garden incorporates a formal rose garden, a citrus grove, an ‘avenue of honour’, a luxurious secret garden, sculptures and a central water feature.
The paths meander through diverse plantings of more than 1500 species and beautiful vistas of the countryside.
Coffee, a lunch box and local wines will be available for purchase, and visitors are welcome to linger as long as they wish to enjoy the classic spring flowers fully. Plants propagated from the garden will also be available for purchase, many of which are rare.
Visitors are also welcome to visit Seasonal Concepts, just a few kilometres from Rokeby.
Seasonal Concepts offers various freshly cut roses and a fascinating range of old wares displayed in a beautiful purpose-built pavilion overlooking the rose beds, with the Goulburn River beyond. Entry to Seasonal Concepts is free.
The garden at Rokeby will be open from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22. Entry is $10, students $6 and under 18s free. Purchase tickets via Trybooking at https://www.trybooking.com/CIFPF or at the gate. Catering proceeds will support the Tallarook Tarts, the Tallarook community arts group.
