1986
Tongala teenager Brandt Kelly was selected in a squad of 26 to vie for a position in the Victorian under-17 cricket team.
The 15-year-old Year 10 student at St Augustine’s College had been part of an original group of 200 cricketers and was the only Goulburn Valley cricketer remaining in the hunt for a spot in the team.
The leg-spin bowler and left-hand batsman had one trial remaining before the team was cut in half.
– Bruce Payne, 79, and 66-year-old Rene Norris showed that age was no barrier in tennis when they took to the Ky Valley courts for a 1986 match.
A crowd of 120 watched on as the pair put on a exhibition game with three other pairs of veterans. Among other highlights of the special event was the presentation of a life membership to Geoff Beamish, who had filled every position at the club in his 26-year association.
1996
– Former premiership player Billy Campbell was appointed the non-playing coach of Stahope for season 1997.
He replaced David Dowell, who had coached the club for two seasons in the Kyabram District League since crossing from the Heathcote league. Campbell had previously spent a year as understudy to Girgarre’s Laurie Casey.
Former Kyabram star Brad Gale was appointed his assistant coach.
At Kyabram, the coaching staff for 2007 was finalised, with Mick Ryan appointed as reserves coach.
Ryan, a former senior and premiership-winning under-18 coach, joined Mark Herrick as the coach of the thirds, while other members of the coaching panel were Paul Burnett, Josh Finn and Paul Newman.
– Former Kyabram soccer player Robbie Martello tied for the division one best and fairest of the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League, the 23-year-old former St Augustine’s College student capping off a big year that also included a premiership.
Martello had crossed to the Bendigo team after a season with Shepparton South in the North East Soccer League.
2006
Paul Newman was averaging more than 100 with the bat six rounds into the Kyabram District Cricket Association season.
He had scored more than 500 runs, with three centuries and two half-centuries. Aside from his exploits for Fire Brigade he had also scored 51 for the association in its McPherson Shield match.
– Kyabram trained trotting sensation A Touch of Flair was on track for a big pay day after being entered in five weeks of feature events.
The latest of the horse’s wins came in the $20,000 Cranbourne Cup, which was A Touch of Flair’s 24th win from 52 starts (which also included 15 places).
Next start was the $50,000 Bill Collins Mile at Moonee Valley, followed by the Group 1 $100,000 Australian Grand Prix and then heats of the Inter Dominion.
Daryl Douglas was again in the seat for the victory.
