The shop boasts an array of pre-loved goods donated by locals, keeping these items from ending up in landfill.
The Nagambie Tip Shop’s creation got a leg up from the Circular Economy Councils Fund, rolled out by Sustainability Victoria under the Victorian Government’s circular economy policy, Recycling Victoria: a new economy.
Strathbogie Shire Council administrator Peter Stephenson revealed the project scored $72,000 from the Circular Economy Councils Fund, with council chipping in an extra $35,000.
“It’s fantastic to see one resident’s trash become another’s treasure, while reducing our environmental footprint,” he said.
“Nagambie Tip Shop will help divert reusable goods from landfill, lower the running cost of the transfer station, and help residents with the cost of living.”
Council staff at the transfer station give items the once-over to check if they’re fit for resale.
“Potential donations are inspected for safety and saleability, product bans, mandatory standards and product recalls,” Mr Stephenson said.
Items that make the cut are sold in the shop for between $1 and $20, with the takings helping to cover the transfer station’s operating costs.
Second-hand products that can be donated to Nagambie Tip Shop include:
- furniture
- bikes
- camping equipment
- garden tools and equipment (such as pots, wheelbarrows, mowers)
- construction items (such as windows, doors, toilets)
- homewares and kitchenware
- toys
- barbecues
- CDs/DVDs/videos
- books
- ski equipment
Banned products include:
- electrical items
- child car seats and restraints
- helmets
- fire extinguishers and safety gear
- household or farm chemicals
- liquids
- knives
- mattresses and bedding
Nagambie Tip Shop is a cash-free zone, accepting only credit/debit cards and mobile payments.
The project lines up with the 2021-25 Council Plan under Strategic Focus Area 3: Protect. Enhance. Adapt. It sprang from a feasibility study in 2021, which included picking the brains of the community through a survey and information sessions.
