Event host Adele Deverell encourages everyone to run, walk or stroll along the Goulburn River Trail on Sunday, May 12 to raise money for women’s health research.
“The purpose of Mother’s Day Classic is to raise vital research funds for breast cancer,” Ms Deverell said.
“This year, they are incorporating ovarian cancer as well to try and tackle those two major killers for women in Australia.”
According to the Cancer Council, there is currently no effective early detection test for ovarian cancer.
There is also no evidence that monitoring or screening leads to reduced mortality from ovarian cancer in women at increased risk.
This is the second year Seymour has participated in the Mother’s Day event.
Mother’s Day Classic was founded in 1998 by Mavis Robertson and Louise Davidson when industry superannuation firms noticed that breast cancer was one of the common reasons for accessing death and disability benefits.
The fun run began with only 3000 participants from Melbourne and Sydney but is now celebrated across the country.
“Mother’s Day Classic is one of Australia’s largest fun runs,” Ms Deverell said.
“I think this year, (there’s) 67 events.
“You got your major city events, and then you got your local events, which is what Seymour’s Mother’s Day Classic is.”
Registrations are open, and over 100 people have signed up, but Ms Deverell says they expect around 300 people to attend on Mother’s Day.
On the day, coffee vans and vendors will be present.
“We have an amazing amount of prizes already donated from local sponsors and some great big brand names,” Ms Deverell said.
Funds raised at the event will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Mother’s Day Classic Seymour will be held at Lions Park on Mother’s Day, May 12, starting at 8.30am.
“It’s suitable for everybody,” Ms Deverell said.
“We’ve got different distances of two kilometres, five and 10 kilometres.
“Dogs on a leash are welcomed.
“It’s really important to get behind and back (research into) these very important female cancers that are killing women every single day.”
