Gene’s family tells us he was not in favour of a funeral as such, so he has left them to organise a small celebration to mark his life.
The event will be held today in the beer garden of the Pastoral Hotel from 11am. Light refreshments will be provided.
Gene’s wife and family would welcome anyone who knew him to join them at the function.
Meanwhile I’m sure he has already caught up with long time mate and fellow boxer, Neal ‘Chilla’ Childs.
In fact I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Chilla had taken over Pearly Gate duty from St Peter so he would be the first to greet him and show him around so they could yarn about their boxing days.
Sympathy is extended to the Hillsey family.

It is earlier than usual but Mathoura Public School is calling for enrolments already.
The move is designed to enable early planning of classes, along with literacy and numeracy support groups for 2025.
The school has a reputation for high quality education, individualised learning, high academic results, excellent attendance records, and who can forget its recognition by the NSW Education Department as an Ambassador School, placing it in the top six primary schools in the state.
And in addition it has a child minding facility attached to it.
So if you have a child who is due to start school next year, or know of someone else who has, then contact the school online or call about having a tour and learning first hand what it has to offer – you won’t regret it.

Mathoura is widely known as ‘Windy Place’, a name few of us would dispute.
However more recently it could, or even should, be called ‘Freezing Place’.
Talk about needing the thermal underwear!
