Kyabram’s three peak historical bodies joined forces to conduct a Tribute to the Light Horsemen at the Kyabram cemetery on October 31.

The significance of the date relates to the 800 Australian Light Horsemen and the Charge of Beersheba that occurred on October 31 in 1917.

Kyabram Historical Society, its Cemetery Trust and the Kyabram RSL were involved in the ceremony at the Lone Pine/Anzac Memorial on 3rd Avenue.

The taking of Beersheba was ultimately attributed to the 800 mounted 4th Australian Light Horse soldiers, who achieved what 50,000 British troops with tanks could not do, breaking through the Turkish artillery and opening the doorway to the town of Beersheba’s much-needed water wells.

It was the 105th anniversary of the famous battle, with a light horse re-enactment involving a group from Benalla at the ceremony,

Among the group was a two-year-old waler (the name given to the horses that were bred in the colony of New South Wales).
