Even the most prominent creators of children’s books started as children, dreaming about telling their story through word or art.
An exhibition displaying works created by Australian children’s authors and illustrators when they were young, showcasing their early attempts at storytelling, will visit Seymour later this year.
The Juvenilia exhibition includes contributions from Andy Griffiths, Alison Lester, Ursula Dubosarsky, Graeme Base, Hazel Edwards, Danny Katz, Kylie Howarth and many more.
Curated by Aimee Chan, the works have been lent for display by their makers, who all want this generation of dreamers to know that everyone has to start somewhere.
The pieces vary greatly, depending on the age of the individual at the time. Some reflect the author or illustrator they have become.
Ms Chan said she was honoured to be trusted with the pieces.
“It's so exciting to be able to get a glimpse into the creative process,” she said
"This is a rare and intimate insight into the mind of some of Australia's best children's authors and illustrators.“
The exhibition opens at the Shepparton Library from January 19 to February 23, moves to Euroa on February 24 to Mach 16 and comes to Seymour on March 17 until May 3.
