Mr Glover, RFD (Reserve Force Decoration), served four decades with the Royal Australian Air Force working as a medical rediographer, as well as serving in Malaysia in 1973 and Bougainville on peacekeeping operations in 2000.
He also worked in academia at RMIT, and at Melbourne and Monash universities as a senior lecturer teaching students the many aspects of X-ray imaging and ultrasound techniques.
After many years of service with distinction to the RAAF, Mr Glover, who retired as Wing Commander, was nominated for a prestigious award by the Rochester RSL sub-branch last Wednesday night, February 14.
“It’s exciting to see that the people of Rochester feel a sense of appreciation for the work I have provided toward the community and see that my contributions have been formally acknowledged,” Mr Glover said.
“When I received the nomination, I was shocked. I had no idea I was nominated for my time in the RSL in Rochester, and I am incredibly grateful for the award and the recognition.
According to Mr Glover, the process of being nominated for the RSL award is lengthy, including six pages verifying the period of service, rank, deployments and qualifications of the nominee.
Several state committees first see it before going on the federal committee, where it is finally accepted as genuine.
“In my time, I have nominated several people for the life membership of the Returned and Services League, and it is a privilege to see many people I know and served be awarded this accolade.
Rochester RSL sub-branch president Cameron Lovering attended the event and said these words about the momentous occasion.
“John is a local man who has served the veteran and wider community with distinction, he said.
“His nomination and citation details an impressive service history.”
