The scholarship is awarded to the winner of the Outstanding Construction/Trade Apprentice of the Year at the Deniliquin Business Excellence Awards.
It recognises an individual who displays outstanding and inspirational qualities in both their work and personal life.
The scholarship is named for former Fitzpatrick Fabrications apprentice Will McKern, who died in a car crash on his way to trade school last year.
It is supported by Will's employer and workmates at Fitzpatrick Fabrications, Troy Denbrok of Hotondo Homes, Dahlsens Mitre 10 Deniliquin and the Deniliquin Business Chamber.
Cooper is an apprentice with Barnetts Deniliquin, where he started working while still completing high school.
“These types of awards or scholarships for apprentices are a great way to be able to recognise their work,” Cooper said.
“I was always looking to do an apprenticeship, but I wanted to finish school.
“Barnett’s had me on a school-based apprenticeship, so it worked out.”
The judges felt Cooper met all the category requirements “with a ten-out-of-ten, showing how he lives up to the values of this scholarship”.
In nominating Cooper, Barnetts Deniliquin said he is “a cheerful, cooperative, and punctual staff member who is eager to learn”.
“He works well both independently and as part of a team,” his citation read.
“His sports background keeps him fit, aiding his endurance for physical tasks and helping him get along with other tradespeople.
“Being family oriented enhances his work attitude, allowing him to interact comfortably with a wide range of customers, who he makes feel at ease while addressing their issues, brightening their days with his friendly demeanour.”
