More than 40,000 bins will arrive at homes between November and February.
The new kerbside collection service to empty these bins will begin in March 2025.
Mitchell Shire Council advises that residents should bring the new bins in from the kerbside and store them until the new service starts.
A new seven litre kitchen caddy will be delivered along with the food and garden organics bin, to collect vegetable scraps and left over food.
Once the caddy is full, council says residents can simply empty the contents into the food and garden organics bin.
Caddies can be lined with old newspaper, paper towel or lime green compostable caddy liners stamped with AS5810 or AS4736.
Kerbside bin collection frequency changes will start from March 1, 2025“
- Food and garden organics (green lid) — collected weekly
- Mixed recycling (yellow lid) — collected fortnightly alternate with general rubbish
- General rubbish (red lid) — collected in the alternate fortnight with mixed recycling
- Glass recycling (purple lid) — collected monthly
The new food and garden organics bin can be used for lawn clippings, leaves, weeds and various food items, including dairy products, meat and bones. Once collected the contents will be sent to Repurpose It in Epping where they are turned into nutrient-rich compost.
From March, glass will no longer be accepted in the mixed recycling bin and instead any glass bottles and jars should be placed in the new glass recycling bin which will be collected monthly. Once collected the contents will be sent for processing and made into new jars, bottles and road base material.
Residents using collection points will not receive the new bins; the new service is only for properties within the compulsory collection zones.
