Seymour 17.12 (114) lt Shepparton United 22.7 (139)
In this round six encounter from 2014, Shepparton United pulled off one of the greatest escapes.
An eight-goal final term from the visitors helped turn around an 11-point deficit, as United ran away to post a four-goal victory.
The first quarter was a shootout that United won 6.3 to 5.6, but Seymour bounced back to lead at half-time by 11 points after holding United to three goals.
A further 10 majors were kicked in the third term, which allowed the home side to hold on to its 11-point lead.
The high-scoring affair was a true battle of the forwards, with Seymour’s goal-kicking maestro Saad Saad ending the day with seven majors.
United gun Tim Looby walked off the ground with six goals and teammate Brodie Ross chimed in with five.
Paul Currie was the best performer for the Demons, alongside Justin Davies and Shaun Huy (three goals).
Jason Cole was at his brilliant best for Seymour, while Rory Scopel and Harry Wheeler were two standouts.
Avenel v Ardmona
Round 3, 2011, at Avenel Recreation Reserve
Avenel 17.14 (115) lt Ardmona 18.9 (116)
With Ardmona and Avenel desperate for their first win of the season in round three, this one-point thriller gave supporters their money’s worth when it came to entertainment.
It was Ardmona’s Daniel Ferguson who got his moment in the spotlight, kicking the match-winning goal moments before the siren sounded to hand the Cats the win.
Avenel almost completed the fairy-tale finish, knocking over a 53-point deficit to snatch the lead late in the game after Gerard Liddell kicked his fourth goal of the day, before Ferguson’s heroics reclaimed the lead.
Cats coach Joe DeAngelis said his side’s victory came from a team-wide contribution.
DeAngelis kicked five himself, while Rhys Bucktin starred with seven, but it was Matt Cameron who earned best-on-ground honours with his defensive mindset.
Liddell combined with Rob Sidebottom (five goals) up forward for Avenel, while backmen Tom O’Connor and John Duckworth also impressed.
Nagambie v Girgarre
Round one, 2013, at Nagambie Recreation Reserve
Nagambie 13.17 (95) d Girgarre 12.11 (83)
Girgarre and Nagambie’s match-ups throughout the past decade have been generally one-sided affairs favouring the Lakers.
But this opening round match in 2013 proved a winner, with the Lakers only just snagging bragging rights by 13 points.
In Linc Sullivan’s first game as senior coach, the Lakers got off to a hot start, forging ahead for a 23-point lead at quarter-time.
But the match evened out over the course of the next 90 minutes of play, with Girgarre getting within two points of Nagambie at half-time.
Nagambie found an edge in the second half and again pushed the margin out to 25 points late in the fourth. Girgarre fought hard for a comeback, but ultimately fell short by 12 points.
Sam Collins kicked three goals for Nagambie, while Michael Shiels was judged best-on-ground for his work through the midfield.
