On Friday, September 19 the Australian Defence Force (ADF) held an AFL match at Kings Park, Seymour. Despite the competition, it was a day for personnel to let their hair down and engage with the local community.
The school of artillery and school of armour faced off while onlookers enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a few cold ones thanks to Lyons and Seymour footy club who opened the canteen for the occasion.
Major General Andrew Hopkin, President of Army Aussie Rules Football Association was down from Canberra for the occasion. He said that the game complements military life, helping the soldiers develop leadership and resilience on and off the field.
Despite involvement in local sporting clubs dropping off over the past few years due to external demands and pressures, Major General Hopkin’s hopes today's match has marked the revival of local footy for defence force personnel post covid.
