This October, the organisation is launching The Mighty Trek Challenge, an ambitious 900km journey from Sydney to Melbourne — pushing a neonatal incubator every step of the way.
The trek, which will pass through 20 locations across NSW and Victoria, is set to highlight the challenges families face when navigating life in neonatal intensive care units.
Alongside the trek, the annual Walk for Prems — Australia’s largest event dedicated to premature and sick babies — will be expanding in 2025 with new locations and additional ways for people to get involved.
“Together, let’s raise $1 million for premature and sick babies,” Life’s Little Treasures chief executive Felicia Welstead said.
“This vital funding will enable Life’s Little Treasures Foundation to expand our presence with support staff in 20 tertiary hospitals by 2026 — doubling our capacity to help families at one of the toughest times in their life.”
The 20 stops on The Mighty Trek Challenge will host Walk for Prems events, where communities can participate in family-friendly walks, challenge themselves with laps or book a slot to push the incubator — symbolising the journey families experience in NICU.
The event will take place in Shepparton on October 17.
Join the movement
With 48,000 babies born premature or sick in Australia each year — one in seven requiring critical care in NICU or Special Care Nurseries — The Mighty Trek Challenge gives individuals, workplaces and businesses a chance to step up and show their support.
Here’s how to get involved:
• Join a Walk for Prems event: attend one of the 20 stops along the Sydney-to-Melbourne route, take part in the walk or challenge yourself to complete as many laps as you can.
• Push the incubator: sign up to take a turn pushing the incubator at selected locations.
• Take on The Mighty Trek Challenge: set your own distance goal — walk, run, ride or even roller-skate throughout October.
• Corporate and workplace involvement: businesses can participate by forming teams, sponsoring kilometres or taking part in the 20 CEOs for 20 Years initiative, where leaders aim to raise $5000 each.
For 20 years, Life’s Little Treasures Foundation has provided practical support and community connections to families facing the challenges of premature birth.
Your support will help them reach even more families in the years to come.
